Community Mourns Tadhg Callaghan Carter After Donegal Rally Tragedy
A community in Donegal is coming to terms with the loss of one of its own. Tadhg Callaghan Carter, just 15 years old, died on Saturday afternoon after an incident involving a competing vehicle at the Donegal International Rally. A second spectator was also taken to hospital. The tragedy has left Letterkenny and the wider county reeling, searching for ways to hold each other up in the difficult days ahead.
What happened at the Donegal International Rally?
The incident occurred at approximately 4.47pm on Saturday, June 20, at Trentagh near Kilmacrennan, at what organisers designated as Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan. Emergency services attended the scene, and Tadhg was transported to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A second spectator was also transferred to the same hospital.
The local coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
Who was Tadhg Callaghan Carter?
Tadhg was a student at Saint Eunan's College in Letterkenny. He had just completed his Junior Certificate examinations and was preparing to enter fifth year this September. Those who knew him describe a young person full of life and consideration for others.
He looked out for others, brought others out of themselves and included others. He was very inclusive and he was involved in the GAA, soccer too, but mostly the GAA. He was a very kind and respectful child.
Those words came from Damien McCroary, principal of Saint Eunan's College, speaking on RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland. He described Tadhg as a child full of energy, a young person who made space for people around him.
In a statement, Saint Eunan's College said Tadhg was a deeply valued and popular member of the school community.
It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that our school community learns of the sudden and tragic passing of our student, Tadhg Callaghan Carter. His loss will be felt deeply by his classmates, friends, teachers and everyone who knew him.
How is the community responding?
Saint Eunan's College will open on Monday, June 22, to support the whole school community from 11am. A short prayer service will take place at 12pm, followed by light refreshments in the college canteen and courtyard.
Mr McCroary explained the thinking behind opening the school during the holiday period. People usually, in these times of grief, want to do something, want to show their respects, want a place to congregate and to support each other, he said. Because the summer holidays is on for most of the year groups it is important that we would offer this today.
The school also visited the family home and the homes of other boys caught up in the situation.
Councillor Pauric McGarvey, mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, passed on his sincere condolences to Tadhg's parents, brother, sisters and his extended family and friends at this difficult time. He also acknowledged the injured, the driver and co-driver, and paid tribute to the emergency services who attended.
What investigations are underway?
Motorsport Ireland, the governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in Ireland, has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident in conjunction with detectives from An Garda Síochána.
Art McCarrick, Motorsport Ireland sporting manager, described the death of Tadhg as beyond devastating and offered condolences on behalf of the organisation to the family and friends.
On the safety plan for the event, Mr McCarrick said the safety plan would have listed numerous areas where it would have been prohibited to stand. Whether the individuals involved were in a prohibited area, he could not comment at this moment.
Both Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club have expressed their deepest sympathies to the family and asked that their privacy be fully respected at this time.
What about the video footage circulating online?
Motorsport Ireland has acknowledged that video footage of the accident is circulating on social media. The organisation has asked anyone who sees it not to share it. This is a matter of basic decency toward the family and those affected. The footage captures a moment of real tragedy, not content for consumption.
How can witnesses help the investigation?
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were present at Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan on Saturday, especially those with mobile phone or dash cam footage in the area. Anyone with information is urged to come forward to assist with the investigation.
