Cunningham Laments Missed Chance to Experiment for Ireland
For a national side that carries the aspirations of its people, friendly internationals offer a vital space for renewal. Former Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham believes the recent fixtures against Qatar and Canada were a missed opportunity for manager Heimir Hallgrimsson to broaden his horizons and experiment with his playing pool.
A Cautious Approach Under the Aviva Lights
The Boys in Green secured a 1-0 victory over Qatar at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, 28 May, before playing out a 1-1 draw with Canada in Montreal in the early hours of Saturday morning. While Hallgrimsson handed debuts to three players in the first game, namely Mason Melia, Jaden Umeh and Corrie Ndaba, and four in the second match, namely Dawson Devoy, Joe Hodge, Kian Leavy and Adam Brennan, Cunningham feels the manager remained overly reliant on established figures.
During the build-up to the Canada game on RTÉ's live coverage, the former international voiced his concerns. Expanding on his view during Monday's RTÉ Soccer Podcast alongside Alan Cawley, Cunningham questioned the decision to start with the most experienced defensive line against Qatar.
