Doneraile Murder Trial Hears of Fatal Head Trauma
A court has heard that father-of-five and local postman Barry Daly died from severe head trauma after a forceful blow broke his jaw, causing him to choke on his own blood. Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster told the Central Criminal Court in Cork that the injuries left the 44-year-old unable to breathe, leading to his death outside his partner's home in Doneraile on 12 October 2025.
The Fatal Injuries Sustained by Barry Daly
Dr Bolster carried out the post-mortem on Mr Daly, who was found in the early hours of that October morning at Rockview Terrace. She told the jury of seven women and five men that the most serious trauma was to the right side of his jaw, which suffered multiple fragmentary fractures. The force was such that the jaw was dislocated from the skull on the left side.
The pathologist explained that the severe facial and head trauma caused an awful lot of blood to go down into the primary organs of the respiratory system. Mr Daly's lungs were four times their normal weight.
And without oxygen you die. You have blood in the windpipe, blood in the mouth, you have these fractures, you just cannot get air in.
She confirmed the cause of death was cardiorespiratory arrest complicated by aspiration and blood. While alcohol and cocaine were present in his system and noted as a contributory factor, Dr Bolster clarified they merely accelerated the death rather than caused it. A broken golf club head was found at the scene, and there were no defensive injuries on the deceased.
A Community Figure Lost to Violence
There is a quiet tragedy in the small details of a life cut short. Among the possessions found in the clothing of the deceased was an organ donor card, a silent testament to a man who spent his days serving his community as a postman. Mr Daly was a father of five. His life ended in a driveway, surrounded by the stark evidence of a violent encounter.
Three young men stand accused of his murder. Alex Deady, aged 21, from Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, alongside two youths aged 16 and 17, have pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder. However, Deady and the older teenager have admitted guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Daly.
What Led to the Incident in Doneraile?
The court has heard evidence regarding an altercation that occurred hours before the fatal incident. Mr Daly struck a young woman in the mouth outside Eilys Bar in Doneraile. Witnesses have offered conflicting accounts, with some claiming the punch was deliberate and others believing it was accidental.
A juvenile witness, who cannot be named, told the trial that he saw the three accused coming from the direction of Mr Daly's home. He greeted them but received no response. The witness then heard yelling, including the words, Barry thought he was smart hitting a girl. He is laid out now.
