Dublin-based technology innovator Davra has unveiled a groundbreaking partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) to prevent catastrophic mining dam failures. The initiative, launching in September 2025, represents another milestone in Ireland's emerging leadership in sustainable industrial innovation.

Revolutionary Monitoring System for Mining Safety

The Protelum project, developed through ESA's InCubed programme, introduces an intelligent monitoring system that combines satellite imagery, IoT sensors, and advanced analytics to protect communities and environments from mining waste disasters. This development follows Ireland's growing prominence in technological innovation, particularly in the financial and industrial sectors.

Preventing Environmental Catastrophes

The platform addresses a critical global challenge: the safe management of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). The 2019 Brumadinho disaster in Brazil, which claimed over 250 lives, exemplifies the devastating consequences of dam failures. Davra's solution enables millimeter-precise monitoring of structural integrity, providing crucial early warning capabilities.

"ESA's support has been a critical enabler for us. It allowed Davra to accelerate innovation and bring forward solutions that address one of the mining industry's most pressing challenges," states Paul Glynn, CEO of Davra.

Global Impact and Irish Innovation

Building on Protelum's foundation, Davra's Sentinel application now provides 24/7 oversight of mining facilities through satellite data and connected sensors. The company's expansion into South Africa, one of the world's largest mining regions, demonstrates Dublin's growing influence as a hub for sustainable technological advancement.

Key Features of the Platform:

  • Real-time monitoring through satellite imagery and IoT sensors
  • Advanced analytics for early risk detection
  • Compliance with Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management
  • Environmental protection and community safety measures

The initiative represents a significant step forward in combining environmental protection with industrial innovation, showcasing Ireland's commitment to sustainable technological advancement on the global stage.
