Major Accessibility Improvements Transform Kerry Rail Hub

In a significant step forward for Kerry's transportation infrastructure, Rathmore railway station has undergone a €4.2 million transformation focused on improving accessibility and passenger facilities.

Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr. Martin Grady, officially unveiled the station's new footbridge, marking the completion of extensive works that will benefit thousands of weekly passengers traveling between Kerry and Cork.

Key Infrastructure Improvements

  • New footbridge with two 13-person lifts
  • Enhanced platform services and surfacing
  • Upgraded toilet facilities
  • Improved CCTV and help-point systems
  • Updated signage throughout the station

The project, which follows similar successful infrastructure developments across Ireland, was funded through the Department of Transport's National Transport Authority as part of Iarnród Éireann's comprehensive accessibility programme.

Community Impact and Safety

The renovation aligns with broader national initiatives to enhance public transport safety and accessibility across Ireland. The improvements demonstrate a commitment to inclusive infrastructure that serves all members of the community.

"The opening of this bridge at Rathmore demonstrates our commitment to making the railway more accessible to all. This new infrastructure will provide ease of access for generations to come," stated Colin Grimes, Programme Manager for Iarnród Éireann.

Future Developments

The success at Rathmore follows recent accessibility upgrades at Little Island and Banteer stations, with five additional stations currently undergoing similar improvements. The project's implementation was guided by input from the company's Disability Users Group, ensuring that upgrades meet the needs of all passengers.
