Poland Summons Israeli Envoy as Outrage Grows Over Flotilla Detentions
Degrading treatment of aid activists, including Irish citizens, sparks European fury
Poland's foreign minister has summoned the Israeli chargé d'affaires over the detention of Gaza aid flotilla activists, including Polish nationals, demanding their immediate release and a formal apology. The diplomatic move adds to a rising tide of international condemnation over Israel's aggressive interception of the humanitarian mission.
Poland firmly condemns the conduct of representatives of the Israeli authorities towards activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla detained by the Israeli army, including Polish citizens, Radoslaw Sikorski stated on X.
Irish Citizens Forcibly Detained in International Waters
More than 400 people, including around 15 Irish citizens, were forcibly detained by Israel after the flotilla, which was attempting to reach Gaza, was intercepted in international waters earlier this week. They are currently being held at the southern Israeli port of Ashdod.
Among the detained Irish citizens is Dr Margaret Connolly, sister of President Catherine Connolly. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee has demanded the immediate release of the Irish citizens, calling the circumstances of their detention entirely unacceptable.
Ben-Gvir's Humiliating Spectacle Draws Fury
Captioned Welcome to Israel, footage posted on X by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shows dozens of activists kneeling with their hands tied and foreheads pressed to the ground as the Israeli national anthem plays in the background. The footage also shows Mr Ben-Gvir heckling and waving an Israeli flag amongst the detained activists.
The degrading treatment has drawn sharp criticism from across Europe and beyond, with many viewing it as a blatant violation of human dignity and international norms.
Taoiseach to Confront EU Leaders Over Treatment
Taoiseach Micheál Martin is to raise Israel's treatment of EU citizens from the flotilla with French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris. Mr Martin has also written to European Council President Antonio Costa, asking that he put the issue on the agenda of the upcoming EU summit.
Mr Costa has said he was appalled by the treatment of the aid flotilla members. This behaviour is completely unacceptable. We call for their immediate release, he stated on X.
European Solidarity Against Israeli Actions
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has slammed Israel's treatment of the activists as unacceptable and called for the immediate release of any detained Italian citizens, demanding an apology from Israel.
It is intolerable that these protesters, among whom there are many Italian citizens, are subjected to this treatment, which violates human dignity, Ms Meloni said in a statement.
Belgium and the Netherlands are also expected to summon their respective Israeli ambassadors over the video posted by Mr Ben-Gvir, their foreign ministers have said. The coordinated European response signals a growing impatience with Israel's disregard for the rights of EU citizens and international law.
Netanyahu Distances Himself From Ben-Gvir
Even within Israel, the actions have sparked friction. Mr Ben-Gvir drew the ire of Prime Minister Netanyahu, who said the minister's dealing with the activists was not in line with Israel's values and norms.
I have instructed the relevant authorities to deport the provocateurs as soon as possible, Mr Netanyahu said in a statement.
Meanwhile, 44 Spanish activists detained in Israel are expected to be deported to Spain via Turkey in a flight leaving at 3pm Israeli time, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said.
A Blockade Against the People of Gaza
Israel controls all entry points into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007. During the Gaza war, triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, the territory has suffered severe shortages of food, medicine and other essential supplies, with Israel at times halting aid deliveries entirely.
A previous flotilla attempt was intercepted last month in international waters off Greece, with most activists deported to Europe. The ongoing blockade and the forceful suppression of aid missions continue to raise urgent questions about the collective punishment of the Palestinian people and the failure of the international community to hold Israel to account.
