Sligo GP Abducted by Israel as Husband Demands Dáil Sanctions
The husband of Sligo GP Dr Margaret Connolly says he has had no contact with his wife since Israeli forces boarded her aid vessel on Monday, and he is demanding that the Dáil seize this week's opportunity to sanction Israel.
Cllr Declan Bree condemned what he called the illegal interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla and the abduction of activists, including his wife, who is a sister of President Catherine Connolly.
Israeli authorities boarded several boats in international waters roughly 130km off the coast of Cyprus on Monday morning.
Speaking to The Sligo Champion, Cllr Bree said he was immensely proud of his wife.
Margaret fiercely opposes injustice and she is passionate about the Palestinian cause. In addition to Israel's campaign of genocide, as a medic she is also conscious that more than 1,700 doctors, nurses, consultants and paramedics have been killed by the Israeli military over the past two years.
Cllr Bree said he received a brief call from his wife on Monday morning before the interception.
Margaret told me Israeli military ships were approaching the flotilla. However, within minutes the phone signal dropped. I expect that was due to the Israelis jamming all communications from the flotilla. In keeping with protocol, she would have thrown her phone overboard before the Israelis boarded her boat.
