Meta Axes 10% of Workforce as AI Overhaul Hits Workers
Thousands of Meta employees face the axe tomorrow as the tech giant pushes forward with a sweeping restructuring plan designed to place artificial intelligence at the heart of its operations. In a memo shared with staff yesterday, the company confirmed that 10% of its global workforce will be laid off on May 20, with deeper cuts to follow later this year.
The move will see roughly 7,000 workers reassigned to AI-related initiatives, while managerial roles are being eliminated altogether. Janelle Gale, Meta's Chief People Officer, told employees that leadership had incorporated what she called AI native design principles into new organisational structures, allowing for flatter teams that can move faster and with more ownership.
A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the plan.
Workers Push Back Against Surveillance and Silence
The overhaul has not gone unchallenged. Over 1,000 Meta employees have signed a petition protesting the installation of mouse-tracking software, which is being used to train AI models to replicate human computer interactions. Staff have raised serious privacy concerns, only to see executives dismiss them out of hand.
For more than a month after Reuters first reported the layoff plans, company leaders stayed silent. During that period, employees took to responding to executive posts on Meta's internal platform, Workplace, with pictures of elephants, a pointed reference to the layoff elephant in the room that nobody in leadership wanted to acknowledge.
Flyers have appeared at Meta offices. Angry posts have flooded internal channels. Workers are openly tangling with the very executives who sign off on their futures. It is a familiar story in the tech sector, where the people who build the profits are too often treated as disposable when the strategic winds shift.
AI-Driven Job Losses: A Growing Pattern
The restructuring at Meta is part of a far-reaching overhaul planned for this year, as the company surges its AI investments in a bid to centre AI agents in both its product offerings and its internal workflows. New teams include Applied AI Engineering and the Agent Transformation Accelerator, both aimed at developing AI agents that can autonomously carry out tasks currently performed by human staff.
Another initiative, Central Analytics, will measure productivity and analytics for agent development. Details on a fourth, called Enterprise Solutions, are expected soon.
In total, layoffs and transfers will hit about 20% of Meta's workforce. The company has also closed an additional 6,000 open roles. Headcount at the social media giant stood at 77,986 employees at the end of March, according to company filings.
These cuts reflect a broader pattern of AI-linked job losses among major US companies this year, particularly in the tech sector. It is a trend that demands attention from policymakers on this side of the Atlantic as well. When corporations are permitted to restructure their workforce around automation without adequate safeguards, the social cost is borne not by shareholders but by communities, families, and public services.
The Question of Accountability
Meta's workers have shown courage in standing up to a management culture that treats surveillance as innovation and job destruction as efficiency. Their resistance deserves solidarity. The drive to replace human labour with autonomous agents is not inevitable. It is a choice, one that should be subject to democratic oversight, robust regulation, and a fair distribution of the wealth that technology generates.
As Ireland continues to host the European operations of some of the world's largest tech firms, the question of who benefits from these transformations could not be more urgent. The workers who built Meta's success deserve better than to be drafted, tracked, and discarded.
