Tudor Faces Uphill Battle as Spurs Chase Champions League Miracle
Igor Tudor has declared it is not "impossible" for Tottenham to overturn a three-goal deficit against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, as the embattled interim manager fights to keep his side's European dreams alive.
The Croatian coach's tumultuous tenure reached crisis point following a catastrophic 5-2 defeat in Madrid last Tuesday, leaving Spurs with a mountain to climb in Wednesday's return leg. However, a spirited 1-1 draw away to Liverpool on Sunday has injected renewed hope into the North London club.
"Difficult but not impossible," Tudor stated with characteristic determination when asked about the daunting task ahead. "We need to stay in the game as much as possible and the game can be long, so focus on our strengths, our things we can have tomorrow and everything still to play."
Key Players Return for Crucial Tie
The return of left-back Destiny Udogie and midfielder Lucas Bergvall from injury provides a timely boost, while captain Cristian Romero is available despite suffering a nasty head clash with teammate Joao Palhinha in the first leg.
"Destiny and Lucas will be on the bench tomorrow," Tudor confirmed, though he acknowledged that Palhinha remains sidelined and Conor Gallagher is also doubtful due to illness.
Adding to Tudor's selection headaches, six-goal striker Dominic Solanke emerged as a doubt for the crucial encounter. "Dom has some small problems. We will see tomorrow how he is," the manager revealed in a SpursPlay interview.
Simeone's Admiration for Romero
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has publicly praised Romero, describing himself as a "big fan" of his fellow Argentine. The centre-back was heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital last summer before signing a new contract with Spurs until 2029.
"I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball," Simeone explained during Tuesday's press conference.
As Tottenham prepare for what could be a season-defining night, Tudor's message remains clear: belief and determination can overcome even the steepest odds in football's most prestigious competition.
