Shane Lowry's Irish Open Triumph: A Homecoming for the People
Shane Lowry delivered a performance for the ages at the Amgen Irish Open, routing the field by an astonishing 11 shots and ending a four-year wait for victory. The Offaly man, who first won this event 17 years ago as a raw amateur, wrote a new chapter in his storied career in front of a home crowd and US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport, an emotional Lowry said,
“Something like this feels as big as it gets for me. The nerves in my stomach this morning. I couldn't be happier. I don't seem to do it very often but when I do it seems to be pretty cool. So that was unbelievable today.”
What did the final round look like for Lowry?
Lowry set a personal target of reaching 20-under-par, fearing a challenger could emerge from the pack. However, four birdies in eight holes extinguished any hope of a comeback. Having previously stumbled from winning positions this season at the Cognizant Classic and Dubai Invitational, he admitted the battle was largely mental on the Clare course.
“You're through five or six holes, you've got a good lead and every time your lead gets more, sometimes the doubts can creep into your head about how big of a disaster it would be if you didn't win,” he reflected. “I went out and I went after it today and I felt like I did a great job.”
How did the season's struggles shape this victory?
The win was made sweeter by the adversity he faced throughout the year. “Off the course life is great, but on the course I've had a few kind of mishaps. It's been well documented and I probably have a lot of doubters out there. And you doubt yourself at times but I went out this morning and I went out to win this tournament. That's what I did. I'm so happy.”
What role did Katie Taylor and family play in his mindset?
Lowry drew inspiration from watching Katie Taylor's emotional farewell at Croke Park last week, where over 80,000 fans saluted the boxing legend. “I sat in Croke Park last Saturday night watching Katie Taylor with almost a little bit of jealousy what she was achieving and getting to do it in front of her home fans and I got to do it this week,” he said.
Family was also at the forefront of his thoughts. With his wife and children back in Florida, he dedicated the win to them. “My daughter always asked me 'when are you going to bring a trophy home?' So yes, I'm going to bring one home.”
